Today electricity plays a major role in human life of all sectors, without which the entire functioning of the world would stumble. However, maintaining the electrical wires and installations in good working conditions is also crucial to ensure the safety of people living around. The electrical hazards can happen anytime uninformed and due to any reasons that can be unpredictable. Therefore performing a regular inspection of the electrical systems becomes important, for which you need to obtain an EICR report.

The EICR helps to identify electrical problems and fix it quickly. However, there are also certain classification codes, which are used in the EICR report. Such codes have their own purpose and meaning to convey and here they are:

  1. Code 1 – (C 1): This code acknowledges the possible dangers in electrical installations, and which need to be fixed first.  In order to neutralize such hazards the person obtaining the report will have to react immediately.
  2. Code 2 – (C1): This implies any hazards observed during the inspection, however, they are not dangerous at that point of time, yet need to be fixed soon as possible to avoid any potential dangers over the days.
  3. Code 3- (C3): This indicates any deficiency observed in the electrical wiring or installation and that may cause any immediate danger. However, by making improvements in the wiring system, the safety of electrical installations can be extended for years.

In addition to these codes, F1 – which is Further Investigation required is also used to indicate the need for inspections of electrical safety.

Any type of electrical installations will seek a regular inspection and testing at least once every 3 years or 5 years. Such inspection will ensure fixing in case of any deterioration in the electrical wiring and installations. The electrical safety checks are known as ‘Electrical Test Certificate’. This test is performed for both commercial and domestic installations.

Most of the property owners think that checking electrical safety when a need arises is enough. But some situations can put you to unexpected risks with no guess. Therefore, always ensuring the perfect functioning of electrical installations is crucial. This emphasizes the need to have an idea about when do you want to get an electrical certificate.

The UK Government released guidance on Private Rented Sector Electrical Safety Standards and Regulations 2020. The guidance was released as three sets for the tenants, landlords, and for local authorities in England.

Here are the circumstances when you need to get your Electrical Test Certificate:

  1. Before you buy a house: If you have a plan to buy a new one, no matter it is new or old, you should also ensure the safety inspection and obtain an electrical test certificate before occupying.
  2. If your house is old: If your house is getting old over the years, especially if it is over 25 years old, and using old wiring until, then you must certainly go for a test and obtain the certificate.
  3. After major storms: Any natural risks like storms and floods can directly or indirectly cause damages to the electrical wirings. Therefore, after every major storm, it becomes crucial to go for a test and obtain the certificate.

Besides, you must also ensure getting the certificate at every regular interval of time, say for once in 3 years at least.
